God bless you!

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

This is the last Sunday of the Christmas Season, so we start the Mass with ‘Joy to the World’ and then start to move away from Christmas music. No new music this week, but we have a very old song from the 13th Century, ‘Of the Father’s Love Begotten’ that we don’t often sing. Here’s a link for it: https://youtu.be/T1CAZi_PmLA The song for the Preparation of the Gifts, ‘When Jesus Comes to Be Baptized,’ is sung to the tune of ‘On Jordan’s Bank.’ The words to these songs and all the others can be found in this attachment.

So for this last Sunday of the Christmas season, I first want to share a recording of ‘Joy to the World’ as sung by the Bulgarian National Radio Children’s Choir. They are wonderful! https://youtu.be/sihe9Li_cqU

Just like the song choices for mass, we’ll now move on to the Baptism of the Lord. I found some interesting songs about His baptism in a wide variety of musical styles. The first one I’m going to share with you is ‘Troparion of the Theophany of Christ’ sung by a Byzantine choir from Pittsburg. It has a very Middle Eastern sound. https://youtu.be/JkrXBn0-cRQ

At the opposite end of the musical spectrum, here’s a song sung by George Jones, ‘I Wonder How John Felt (When He Baptized Jesus)’  https://youtu.be/jibwyko5C_s

The next one is ‘The Baptism of Jesus’ by Peg Angell, sung in a folk music style. https://youtu.be/U7d3fZUehMo

A more traditional hymn, ‘When John Baptized in Jordan’s River’ is sung here by a monk, Brother Alphonsus Mary. https://youtu.be/XBRGMSV5WyI

And lastly, after this tumultuous week of strife and shocking numbers in the pandemic, I have two songs for you. The first is ‘He Knows (Song of Hope in Turbulent Times)’ sung by a young girl, Hallie Cahoon.
https://youtu.be/ZkC4gohAmtI

The second is by an even younger girl, Claire Ryann Crosby, only 5 at the time this was recorded with her father. ‘Peace in Christ’  https://youtu.be/Waitmz6C100

I hope they bring you peace. God bless you and keep you well.

Music and Mass Links for the
Feast of the Holy Family

The Christmas Season continues this weekend with the Feast of the Holy Family. Mass will be celebrated outside in the church patio this afternoon at 4:30 PM and tomorrow at 8:00 AM, 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM. Mass will be streamed live tomorrow at 8:00 AM at this link on the Sacred Heart YouTube channel:

We would like to apologize for the interrupted stream from last Sunday’s live 8:00 AM Mass. It was due to a failure in the modem connecting the rectory to Cox internet. We do everything that can be done to make the the entire video process seamless. The Eucharist is central to the spiritual lives of Catholic. Attendance at Mass not only strengthens our soul but also provides us with an opportunity for Christian fellowship. During the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we know the stream is helpful in maintaining your spiritual life and cope with a difficult time.

God bless you!

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

I hope you all had a wonderful and blessings-filled Christmas! This weekend we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family. We’re still singing Christmas carols, so I’m sure you know the songs except possibly Child of the Poor, although we have sung it just one day a year as long as I’ve been here. If you can’t remember how it goes, here’s a link for you:  https://youtu.be/5DDJ9BPsCjc. The lyrics for this song and all of the others can be found in this attachment.

As always, I was on the hunt for music to share with you to enhance the liturgy of the day. Here are my choices for today:

‘Joseph’s Lullaby’ by Mercy Me https://youtu.be/NgcGmgrNuLM This first one is special because it takes Joseph’s perspective. We don’t often get that!

‘Precious Promise’ by Stephen Curtis Chapman   https://youtu.be/ckKiPcS4irk

‘Labor of Love’ sung by Jill Phillips https://youtu.be/DBmWtX9k6VY

‘Arrive’ from His Story the Musical https://youtu.be/sY0RQxVhXBA

‘A Baby Changes Everything’ sung by Faith Hill  https://youtu.be/42Ixa36ZSg4

And for you traditionalists, ‘What Child Is This’ sung by Charlotte Church https://youtu.be/4s9ghpx-b3o

I hope you all continue to have a blessed Christmas season. May God continue to bless you with good health.

Here’s What You Said…

Thank you to those who responded to the Christmas Mass survey.

As you can see, we anticipate an overflow crowd at the 4:00 pm Mass. When we reach our numbers according to State guidelines, we will no longer be able to let people in the patio area. The grass area outside of the fence will be available.

We need to be sure everyone is safe and socially distanced. Please do not enter the courtyard if it has reached its capacity. If you are concerned about the numbers and space available, you may want to consider one of the other Masses.

Today, there were signs out in front of the parish office on Saratoga Avenue indicating there will be no parking on Thursday, Dec. 24th. Without our knowledge, the city plans to remove a couple of the palm trees. We do not know if the work will be completed before the Masses.

These numbers only represent the people who responded to the survey. We are expecting there will be more.

Christmas Eve 4:00 PM           98
Christmas Eve 7:00 PM           57

Christmas Day 8:00 AM          48
Christmas Day 10:00 AM        42

Watching Online                     50
Unable to attend                      20
Will be there but not sure what time yet     5

Thank you again for responding to the survey!

Music and Mass Links for

Christmas Day

The Christmas schedule in the courtyard is somewhat different. Mass will be at 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM on Christmas Eve. The Masses for Christmas Day will be at 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM. There will be not 5:00 PM Mass on Christmas Day. Two Masses will be streamed live. One on Christmas Eve and another on Christmas Day. Merry Christmas, Fellow Parishioners!

May God bless you all! I’m sure you know the music for Mass since they’re all Christmas carols, but the words can be found in this attachment. Here are the links for the songs I want to share with you for Christmas. The first five are contemporary songs that were all new to me. Carrie Underwood’s ‘Sweet Baby Jesus’ is literally new; it just came out this month, so it will probably be new to you, too.

‘Jesus Born on This Day’ sung by Avalon https://youtu.be/DdRcK3vN2RE

‘Do You Have Room?’ by Shawna Belt Edwards https://youtu.be/jR7lo9ycKBA

‘Christmas Eve in Bethlehem’ by Hannah Kerr https://youtu.be/HD1-HL1G_eY

‘Child of Love’ by Sara Groves https://youtu.be/VWK9grKgYOY

‘Sweet Baby Jesus’ by Carrie Underwood https://youtu.be/XL_XnqmyxVk

And finally, I’m going to end with a traditional carol with a very non-traditional video, ‘O Holy Night’ sung by Gentri https://youtu.be/g4fvMgNfN0I

I hope your Christmas is blessed with all good things and filled with joy. Merry Christmas!
