Francis in the Flesh
Mark Price is seen in costume as St. Francis of Assisi. Price, who has been writing and performing one-person plays since 1974 and one-person Biblical portrayals since 1983, will be performing as St. Francis in cities throughout the country, including La Jolla.San Diego’s Inaugural Performance will be held at 4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 29, at All Hallows Parish: 6602 La Jolla Scenic Dr S, La Jolla, CA 92037.

There is no cost to attend the performance, but a good-will offering will be accepted. Price has previously portrayed Judas Iscariot, Simon Peter, St. Joseph, Doubting Thomas, St. Paul and St. Luke.

His performance as St. Paul at St. Therese of Carmel Parish in Carmel Valley was filmed and shown in theaters nationwide. Price said he always strives to show the human side of these larger-than-life figures. His performance as St. Francis, along with the question-and-answer session that typically follows his performances, will be between 90 and 115 minutes.

Through the presentation, Price said, “I hope [audiences] will have a greater and an expanded understanding of Francis [and] know that he was much, much more than just an inspiration for garden statues. I hope they will see that Francis lived in a time not so dissimilar to ours, a time when people went to church but were not living their faith. I hope they will see him as a fellow human being who chose God over the world. I hope that by seeing him, perhaps for the first time or in a new light, they might be inspired and/or motivated to emulate some of the aspects of his life.”

The Benedictine Sisters of Clyde, MO have crafted a host that meets the requirements of being “low gluten with less than 0.01% gluten content” for those who wish to receive Holy Communion under the species of bread. While the hosts distributed at Mass are made of wheat and water, these are an exception made for those whose health is compromised from eating foods containing gluten.

The hosts are approved for use by the Vatican (see http://www.benedictinesisters.org/articledetail.php?id=258&start=0&status=1&m_year=2013).

The small thin bread is kept frozen until ready for consecration and to be consumed at the Mass that the participants are attending. They are placed in a pyx that is reserved exclusively for this use. If you wish to receive using this host, please see the priest or the Volunteer Coordinator prior to the beginning of Mass in order to have the pyx placed on the altar before the start of the liturgy.

When receiving at the Mass, you are asked to come up the center aisle and to receive immediately after the ministers and choir have received in order to minimize contamination from the other breads being distributed.
