Our Summer Bible Series starts Wednesday!

We will be using Ascension Press Series “Ephesians: Discover Your Inheritance.” This 8 week study goes over all of Paul’s Letters to the Ephesians. To do this class you will need to pay and create an account with Ascension Press with the link below. For just $26.95 plus shipping you will get access to the series videos for a year, a study book and an online workbook. You will have homework each week to read the assigned readings in Ephesians and a 20 minute video to watch. On Wednesday night we will discussed what we have learned and keep each other accountable for the readings!

Ascensions Press Description of the Study:

“Ephesians was one of the most widely circulated of St. Paul’s writings because of its powerful, practical instructions for disciples of Christ. In fact, its six short chapters contain some of the most discussed passages in the New Testament. Ephesians: Discover Your Inheritance examines many important themes that are still relevant in today’s Christian culture and society—the nature of marriage, the purpose and role of the Church, the preeminence of grace in God’s plan, and the reality of spiritual warfare.

Presenter Jeff Cavins explores what Paul’s letter to the Ephesians tells us about the nature of the Church—as a body, a household, a mystery, a communion, a bride, and an army. Ephesians: Discover Your Inheritance shows the treasures that await us as adopted sons and daughters in the family of God.”

Music for
Sixth Sunday of Easter

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

This week we have a couple of songs you may not know: ‘Like a Child Rests’ https://youtu.be/OPfaxKZrhIU and ‘By Our Love’ https://youtu.be/yrvPSE0Ih3s. This second one is brand new and the video was posted by the publisher of Breaking Bread, our missal. You can find the words for these songs and all the others in this attachment.

The First Reading this week is from the Acts of the Apostles and tells how the Holy Spirit came down on the Gentiles who were listening to Peter preach and the first song I’m going to share with you makes me think of them. ‘Living in the Overflow’ Charity Gayle and Joshua Sherman https://youtu.be/lmAfEI-Ibgc

The Second Reading and the Gospel both tell us to love one another and here are just a few of the many songs inspired by that:

‘Love One Another’ Tommy Walker Ministry
https://youtu.be/reQOzkCs9_w

‘The Greatest Commands’ Champaign Church of Christ
https://youtu.be/ho1hEjvuHZs

‘Love One Another’ by John Bell and sung by The Cathedral Singers https://youtu.be/x5bwfnY6hQo

‘Love One Another’ by Gladys Knight
https://youtu.be/pu3BY5r4aRY

And as I’m sure you’re all well aware, today is Mother’s Day, and that guided the rest of choices.

‘This Amazing Love’ by Emily Laudeman
https://youtu.be/xll5tDJOoI0

‘A Mother’s Prayer’ by Celine Dion. She revised the words of one of her most favorite songs to tailor it to Mother’s Day.
https://youtu.be/nYGnB28fdDo

This next one is sung by a man with an amazing voice for its quality and its range. He is a countertenor, which means he can probably sing higher than I can! ‘Ave Maria’ (Caccini) sung by Maurizio Di Maio https://youtu.be/-gh6iygBUyE

And lastly, a song that was recorded last year for Mother’s Day, but is for you all:

‘The Blessing’ by a virtual choir organized by Compassion Church. https://youtu.be/ExY1DQKHswM

Wishing you all every blessing for this day and every one to come,

Dare To Go to the Fringes
written by Br. Silas Henderson
Like Benedict’s monks and the Apostles, each of us is called to do our part in realizing this mission, but we are also called to reach across the boundaries — whatever form they might take — and invite others to join us in living out this mission.
Each week we will be sharing a reflection on the Sunday readings at Mass, provied by the publishers of our bulletin.

Music for
Fifth Sunday of Easter
10:00 AM May Crowning

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

First off, I want to apologize for the change of music for the first song last week. When my accompanist couldn’t get to church due to car trouble, I went with a more familiar song. This week we’re having the May Crowning at the 10:00 AM Mass, so we’ll be singing three very traditional songs in honor of the Blessed Virgin. The words to all the songs can be found in this attachment.

Today’s musical sharings start off with three pieces honoring Mary as Queen, in keeping with today’s crowning.

‘Queen of Heaven, Rejoice’ by the Hangad Music Ministry
https://youtu.be/IAbyz4BfvTg

‘Rejoice, O Mary, Queen of Heaven’ by Mary Oberle Hubley
https://youtu.be/RKDOFmHbfZ0

‘Regina Caeli/O Queen of Heaven’ from Journeysongs
https://youtu.be/daVkOC_4CAs

In the Gospel this week, Jesus tells his disciples that he is the vine and we are the branches, inspiring the next two choices.

‘I Am the Vine’ by John Michael Talbot
https://youtu.be/0It_hOg1pD8

‘I Am the Vine’ by Marcsongs
https://youtu.be/W6m2x4XK00c

And the first reading tells of when Paul came to the disciples after his conversion on the road to Damascus and I found some great non-traditional songs about that road.

‘On the Road to Damascus’
https://youtu.be/_bqPLH3veYk

‘The Road to Damascus’ by Smokey Robinson
https://youtu.be/XrQTxZNERmg

And you know how much I like to leave you with a toe-tapper, so the last song for today is ‘Damascus Road’ by the Kingdom Heirs
https://youtu.be/NBJl2ix99zw

That’s it for today. I hope you have a glorious week, with a blessing awaiting you on every road you travel.

Confirmation Ceremony this Saturday

The prophets of the Old Testament foretold that God’s Spirit would rest upon the Messiah to sustain his mission. Their prophecy was fulfilled when Jesus the Messiah was conceived by the Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. The Holy Spirit descended on Jesus on the occasion of his baptism by John. Jesus’ entire mission occurred in communion with the Spirit. Before he died, Jesus promised that the Spirit would be given to the Apostles and to the entire Church. After his death, he was raised by the Father in the power of the Spirit.

Confirmation deepens our baptismal life that calls us to be missionary witnesses of Jesus Christ in our families, neighborhoods, society, and the world. . . . We receive the message of faith in a deeper and more intensive manner with great emphasis given to the person of Jesus Christ, who asked the Father to give the Holy Spirit to the Church for building up the community in loving service.

Auxiliary Bishop of San Diego Ramón Bejarano will be at Sacred Heart Church for the Confirmation Ceremony. It will be held this Saturday, May 1st at 10:00 AM.

You can watch live at this link.

Staying Connected To One Another In Christ
written by Douglas Sousa, STL
Jesus connects us not only to himself but to one another. Just as the branch is vitally connected to the vine, so the believer is vitally connected to Jesus. And just as, apart from the vine, the branch shrivels up and dies, so those who are not connected to Jesus have no life within them.
Each week we will be sharing a reflection on the Sunday readings at Mass, provided by the publishers of our bulletin.
Fourth Sunday of Easter

The Easter season continues with Masses this afternoon at 4:30 PM and tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM and tomorrow afternoon at 5:00 PM.

Music for
Fourth Sunday of Easter

Dear Fellow Parishioners,

This week our first song, ‘Alleluia! Give the Glory’ is not likely to be familiar, but the refrain is easy’. Here’s a link to hear it: https://youtu.be/ogP9cbqxk1s. The rest of the songs are all well known to our parish and their words can be found in this attachment.

The songs I’m going to share this week are based on our readings. The first one is a version of today’s psalm: ‘The Stone Rejected by the Builders Has Become the Cornerstone’ sung here by Divina Canticum https://youtu.be/QouqGVD5czY.

In the second reading St. John tells us we are children of God:

‘No Longer Slaves’ by Zach Williams
https://youtu.be/bDnA_coA168

‘We Are Children of God’ by Monica Scott sung by the One Voice Children’s Choir

And it’s Good Shepherd Sunday! Here’s a sampling of some shepherd songs:

‘Shepherd of My Soul’ by Marty Nystrom

‘Good Shepherd (Lead On)’ by Vineyard Worship

‘The Good Shepherd’ by Fernando Ortega

And for those of you with grandchildren, here’s a fun song: ‘The Baa Baa Song (He’s the Good Shepherd) by Sibling Harmony

May God bless you all and keep you well. Enjoy the music!

Liturgy Changes

The Bishop has now updated our procedures for celebrating liturgy. With his directives in mind, we will return to normal liturgical practices, still mindful of social distancing and mandatory masking.

With these new updates Fr. Tom would like all liturgical activities to resume at Mass.

Here are a few notable changes we will see this Sunday.

  1. Procession at the beginning and the end of Mass.
  2. The gifts will be brought up during the collection.
  3. Announcements at the end of Mass by the priest.
  4. Altar servers will be brought back.
  5. Singing the Mass parts.

If you have any questions or comments please contact Fr. Tom.

There is a lot of additional information about protocols for you in the document that is attached. It contains the safety guidelines. Please download it.
